Yes. The breed was officially named the State Dog of Louisiana in 1979. It was fully recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1995 and is enrolled in the American Kennel Club (AKC) Foundation Stock Service (FSS).

6. Are all Catahoulas born with "glass eyes" and leopard coat patterns?
No. While striking "glass" (ice-blue) eyes, marbled eyes, and merle/leopard coat patterns are iconic breed traits, Catahoulas also come in solid colors, brindle, patchwork, and red merle. Eye colors can range from deep brown and amber to blue or marbled heterochromia.
7. What health tests do you perform on your breeding stock?
At Crown Catahoulas, health is our highest priority. All adult breeding dogs undergo comprehensive DNA testing (via Embark/Wisdom Panel) for over 100 genetic conditions, OFA/PennHIP joint evaluations for hips and elbows, and BAER testing to confirm normal hearing across all merle coats.
8. Are Catahoulas prone to deafness?
In double-merle or predominantly white coats across any breed, there is a higher risk of congenital deafness. At Crown Catahoulas, we strictly avoid risky genetic pairings and perform BAER hearing assessments on our puppies to ensure full hearing capability before adoption.
9. How much exercise does a Catahoula Leopard Dog need?
Catahoulas are high-energy working dogs. They require at least 60 to 90 minutes of daily physical exercise combined with mental stimulation, such as fetch, trail hiking, agility training, or puzzle games, to stay happy and balanced.

15. Can I pick up my puppy in person?
Absolutely! We welcome approved puppy parents to pick up their puppy directly from our home by appointment.
16. What should I feed my Catahoula puppy?
We provide a full dietary sheet upon adoption detailing the premium, high-protein puppy food your dog has been eating. We recommend maintaining this diet for the first few weeks before making any gradual food transitions.
17. How easy is it to train a Catahoula?
Catahoulas are highly intelligent and quick learners, but they require consistent, firm, and positive reinforcement leadership. Because of their independent nature, early puppy training and boundary setting starting from week 8 are strongly recommended.
