Behind Blue Bayou Catahoulas: A Breeder’s Journey - James Makana, A Life Devoted to Catahoulas
A Life Dedicated to the Catahoula
My name is James Makana, and I live in Maple Valley, Washington. My journey with the Catahoula Leopard Dog began in 2003, long before breeding ever crossed my mind. Back then, I was still actively serving in the U.S. Navy. It was during my deployment amid the chaos and intensity of a mission that I suffered a traumatic injury, which left me with 80% hearing loss. I spent two months in a coma and slowly recovered, but the damage was permanent. Today, that injury continues to shape how I interact with the world and run my business.
A Legacy Worth Protecting
After retiring from military service, I felt drawn to something deeply grounding, something that reminded me of loyalty, grit, and quiet strength. That’s when I turned to the Catahoula Leopard Dog. I had owned and loved them for years, but it wasn't until I returned home that I realized how rare they had become. There were far too few breeders maintaining the integrity of the breed, and I saw an opportunity not just to raise puppies, but to honor the legacy of a dog that has been part of American working culture for generations.
I established Blue Bayou Catahoulas with the intention of restoring the respect and visibility this breed deserves. Catahoulas aren’t for everyone, they’re intelligent, bold, and loyal beyond measure but once you’ve owned one, no other breed compares. These dogs are more than companions; they’re partners, protectors, and family.
Breeding With Intention
At Blue Bayou Catahoulas, every litter is planned with purpose. We focus on health, temperament, and working ability, always seeking to improve the breed without compromising its natural instincts. Our dogs are health-tested and raised in a home environment, with exposure to children, other animals, and the kind of stimulation that shapes stable, balanced companions.
I’m not interested in mass-producing puppies, I’m committed to raising exceptional dogs. This means I turn away more clients than I accept, because I believe each Catahoula deserves a home that understands their nature and honors their needs.
Why I Don’t Take Phone Calls
Because of my hearing impairment, I’m unable to conduct business over the phone. I understand this might seem unusual to some, but it’s an important part of how I manage communication effectively. I process multiple adoptions at once, and keeping everything in writing via email or text, not only ensures clarity, but also allows me to track every conversation and detail accurately. It’s not just a matter of accessibility, it’s a way to provide better service to every family I work with.
Thank you for your understanding, and for taking the time to learn more about the person behind Blue Bayou Catahoulas. I take my responsibility as a breeder seriously, and if you choose one of my puppies, you can rest assured that your dog’s first chapter was written with intention, love, and care.
Warm regards,
James Makana
