A Life Shaped by Resilience & Purpose

My name is James Makana, and my story with the Catahoula Leopard Dog began long before I ever imagined becoming a breeder. In 2003, during my service with the U.S. Navy, my life changed dramatically. A devastating injury left me with 80% hearing loss, followed by two months in a coma. Recovery was slow, uncertain, and humbling. The world felt different when I woke up quieter in some ways, heavier in others and I had to learn how to navigate life again.

Yet through all of it, there was one thing that continued to anchor me: the steady, loyal presence of the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Their unwavering nature, their grit, their intuition… they reminded me of the kind of strength I was trying to rebuild within myself.

A Legacy Worth Protecting

After retiring from military service, I found myself drawn back to the breed with a deeper sense of purpose. I had loved Catahoulas for years, but it wasn’t until I returned home that I realized just how rare they were becoming. Fewer and fewer breeders were committed to honoring the true heritage of the Catahoula Leopard Dog its working ability, intelligence, loyalty, and heart.

That’s when I decided to step forward.

I founded Noble Catahoula Kennel with one mission:

to preserve and protect the authentic Catahoula Leopard Dog while raising puppies the right way—ethically, responsibly, and with purpose.

Catahoulas aren’t just dogs; they’re partners. They’re protectors. They’re family. And once you’ve owned one, no other breed feels quite the same.

Breeding With Intention, Not Volume

At Noble Catahoula Kennel, every litter is carefully planned. Nothing is accidental and nothing is rushed. As a responsible Catahoula breeder, I focus on:

  • Health-tested purebred bloodlines
  • Temperament, structure & genetic integrity
  • Balanced family-raised puppies
  • Authentic Catahoula working ability

My dogs are raised in a home environment, exposed to children, structure, and daily stimulation. This isn’t a high-volume operation. I don’t mass-produce puppies, I raise purposeful, well-bred Catahoulas. I turn away far more clients than I accept, because every puppy deserves a home that understands and respects the breed.

Why I Don’t Take Phone Calls

Because of my hearing impairment, I’m unable to communicate effectively over the phone. I know this might feel unusual at first, but keeping everything in writing email, text, or direct message allows me to stay organized, avoid misunderstandings, and track each step of the adoption process clearly. It’s not just accessibility; it’s better service.

A Personal Promise

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the person behind Noble Catahoula Kennel. This isn’t just a breeding program, it’s a commitment born from resilience, purpose, and respect for a truly exceptional breed. If you choose one of my purebred Catahoula Leopard Dog puppies, you can trust that their first chapter was written with intention, honesty, and heart.

Warm regards,

James Makana
